Bishopton Poker League Results 15th August 2007 Gaffer's Poker Table Building Guide

We finally went ahead and built new tables for the league. Here is a wee piece about how we did it.

We followed instructions at http://justinhickey.com/table.htm which I found via www.homepokertourney.com, and made alterations to suit.

The project started with 2 sheets of MDF from B&Q. Big thank you to No1_H for picking these up and transporting them to mine. We then proceeded to mark the oval shape for the table. The length of the table is 5.5 feet and 3.5 feet wide.

After jigsawing the first oval we then used that as a template to mark the second sheet of MDF. Voila 2 oval tables the same size.

All edges were then sanded. Next was the Rail. A 1 inch (approx) rail was marked from one oval (this would eventually come from the playing surface) and a 4 inch rail marked from the second. These were then cut out and then screwed together giving us the skeleton for the rail.

Again this was sanded and then put to one side. Next we sanded and wiped down the playing surface and carefully glued the 1/4 inch foam down with spray adhesive and Weblomaniac's Spray and Smooth™ technique. This ensured that no bubbles or creases were present.

The foam is stuck to the playing surface

Then we trimmed the excess foam from the edges and transported it inside to attach the cloth. This went really smoothly considering we didn't have a staple gun and went budget with drawing pins. We ensured the cloth was pulled tightly and our enthusiasm dulled the pain in our thumbs.

Spirits were high because the playing surface looked so good. We brought the rail in and marked out the foam, again following the build instructions. This was then cut out.

Then all that was left to do was attach the vinyl. We pulled this tight and secured it again with drawing pins. Thumb fatigue began to set in as we did the interior of the rail, but again once it was finished we saw that it was well worth it.

Now was the big reveal. We put the playing surface on my dining room table and then attached the rail - it took a minute or two to get it alligned, but the finished result was, in my unbiased opinion, class. It was then transported to Weblomaiac's house for a home game to break it in. Compliments from the players were in abundance. And It was also greatly received for the Wednesday night league game. Weblomaniac has since purchased a staple gun and secured the materials properly.

Our first poker table completed

So great was the response, that a second table was funded shortly after. We again followed the same procedure, but varied the colour and we now have the two sweetest poker tables around.
